Thanks Ben.
I found it while researching another guy who appears further down the same page of the Cyclopedia.
I Googled the title of the book and found a copy in an Australian Christian bookshop and the advertisement was on another NZ archive site.
The other guy David Shaw was a practicing Hypnotist at the turn of the 20th Century from a building which he named “Amwell.”
It’s now a protected building/private residence, is just around the corner from my new office and still bears the name.
I’m plucking up the courage to knock the door to see whether the current occupants are aware of its origins.

That’s cool Reg. I wonder how many other books there are out there that talk about hypnosis without having it emblazoned all over the cover. How did you find this one?

Mark, I do hope we meet someday. I am not arrogant enough to say that I could definitely hypnotize you. But I am certain enough to say that I would love to give it a go. I have dropped a number of people who looked me in the eye and said “It can’t be done. It’s been tried many times and it never works.”

Anyway, maybe someday…

Suggestability tests ARE waking hypnosis aren’t they? Once someone’s hands are locked together in a ‘test’, then it doesn’t necessarily follow that you have to prize them apart and start the formal hypnosis process. The good hypnotist can bounce off this and stick their other hand to something, tell them that they won’t be able to lift a glaas off the table and even achieve amnesia aswell:

“In a moment I’ll tap the back of your hand and it comes free, but it’s at that point that you can’t remember your name – it’s gone, it’s vanished! The more you try to remember your name when your hand un-sticks, the further away it goes”

As you’ve said Reg, the eye’s closed part is just managing the state. An accomplished hypnotist can get considerable phenomena with the eyes open, having spring-boarded off a sucessful suggestability test.

Interesting, but neither James or Kreskin’s approach would have any effect on me. Nothing like this ever works on me, although I’m always willing and hoping it will. I’m sure both of these gentlemen have had people who do not respond at all. I would be one of them, for sure.

Thanks Ben. The idea of a video FAQ is hardly an original one. Go for it! You’ll enjoy the next series too: The not-so-frequently asked questions. Ones which probably should be frequently asked. They are already filmed and edited. Just waiting for the right time to do another mass upload.
